ThailandPage 3Thai LadiesThai ladies are among the most beautiful women in the world. Not only are they attractive, but their warm hearts and smiles radiate like the sun. Thus, it is not surprising when visiting Thailand to find almost every foreign man with a Thai lady. While it is very common for a foreign man to go out with a Thai lady, there are rules for a foreigner to keep in mind.Generally, it is not common for couples (a foreign man and a Thai lady) to hold hands in public. Mainly because Thais (especially in the neighborhood she lives in) will suspect her of being a prostitute. Also, depending on your relationship it is a good idea to meet her family. Thais are very devoted to their families and would take an offer to meet their family as a compliment, which are points for you! When going out, it is usually the responsibility of the man to pay for everything. This is customary for a Thai and foreign man alike. Food and Where to Eat![]() My favorite topic; Thai food is full of flavor and very spicy. The main ingredients in Thai cooking consist of: chili peppers, various eggplants, basil, cilantro, coconut, ginger, garlic, curry powder etc... Most dishes are curry based with a strong presence of coconut. There are also other dishes such as grilled chicken and other meats, som tom (papaya salad), and various deserts, which also have a strong presence of coconut. One can either go to the traditional restaurant or visit the food stalls. The food stalls in Thailand are world-renowned for the broad variety of dishes, flavors, and aromas. The food is usually very cheap. You can eat a meal for as low as $1 USD or less. Once I had a grilled chicken breast, som tom, and sticky rice for $1 USD and it was robust in flavor. A word of caution; Thai food can be extremely spicy. Usually the cook or waiter at a restaurant or food stall will ask how spicy you want the food and will serve it to your preference. In terms of safety, everything is generally safe to eat. It is always a good idea to get the meat based meals hot and avoid drinking anything containing juices (freshly squeezed), or ice to avoid contamination. Safety Situation in ThailandBeing a third world country, it is possible for the first time visitor to expect Thailand to be unsafe. To the contrary, Thailand, based on my experience, happens to be one of the safest countries I have visited. One can literally go out at all hours of the day and night with no problems.Traveling ithin the country and in neighboring countriesOne of the most convenient things about Thailand is the relative ease of finding a tourist office. Practically from anywhere you are standing in Thailand you can find a tourist office. This makes it surprisingly convenient for you to plan your transportation within the country and abroad. If you are going to travel within the country there are various options. By train, bus, or plane are the usual ways. Train and plane are usually the best options, the most comfortable, and the safest. By bus on the other hand, although it is the cheapest you are stuck to endure the bumpy terrain. Prices among these options varies. For instance, to take the train cross-country it costs $30, by bus it would cost $15, and by plane it costs $100 USD round trip.varies Many tourists, including myself, like to visit neighboring countries while in the Far East. These countries include; Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Singapore, and China. In order to visit these countries you need to prepare a visa for each one you plan to visit. You can have this done by visiting a tourist office. This may take a few days to finalize so it is best you plan the trip in advance. Becoming an Expat?Mainly because of the nightlife and lifestyle, many visitors of Thailand are known to turn into expatriates(move to Thailand permanently). If you decide to go this route it is best to learn how to live like a Thai. This will save a lot of money and heartache in the long run. Also, know your rights. For example, a non-Thai citizen can not own land. Ironically, they can own the building, but not the land. The easiest way many solve this problem is by getting married to a Thai citizen. If you do decide to make this life changing decision I recommend doing your homework. There are many resources. Among these resources is: www.ajarn.com .This site is mostly devoted to foreigners that teach English in Thailand but is also directed toward expatriates. I also recommend trying to meet people who are doing this to find out the pros and cons before taking the plunge. This can be a very fulfilling change or a nightmare. by Norbert Demanuele |
